the challenges and opportunities of the fourth industrial revolution the huxley summit 2018 will bring together business leaders, scientists, policy-makers and opinion-formers on wednesday 28 november 2018 at the royal institution . scientific and technological advances are continuing to merge the physical, digital and biological worlds – disrupting the status quo and changing perceptions of the creators, owners and users. new technologies are promising to change the world for the better, but how can businesses, policy-makers and scientists ensure products of innovation are fit for purpose as societal, environmental and cultural expectations change and shift? 2018 has seen the shift in public perceptions in the uk about the impact of single use plastics on the environment. new technologies, such as ai and gene-editing, have the power to change the relationship between citizens, businesses and countries. how can leaders in boardrooms and government consider changing perceptions in different technical and cultural spheres to create responsible innovations? how does society overcome the challenges of the ‘fourth industrial revolution’ and a potential breakdown of trust in technology from the public? the full programme for the huxley summit 2018 is below. further information about previous summits can be found on the 2016 and 2017 pages. speakers samira is a broadcaster and writer. she presents front row on bbc radio 4, and was previously a presenter on channel 4 news. she will moderate the huxley summit 2018. samira ahmed yasmin is a journalist, author and broadcaster, who writes for the international business times, the i newspaper and the mail. yasmin alibhai-brown jim al-khalili obe is a scientist, author and broadcaster. he is a professor of physics at the university of surrey where he also holds a chair in the public engagement in science. jim al-khalili liz is a science and wildlife presenter who hosts bbc shows and documentaries. her new bbc one documentary, drowning in plastic, will be broadcast in october 2018. photo by andrew crowley. liz bonnin david is the group controller and chief financial officer of group finance at bp. david bucknall marisa is the ceo of impact advisory and finance at credit suisse. she has been recognised by both the bbc and forbes magazine as a leading uk businesswoman. marisa drew emma is the chair of the environment agency, and sits on the boards of future cities catapult (vice chair), shareaction (chair), and menhaden capital plc (board member). previously, she was the director of stewardship at jupiter asset management. emma howard boyd harry is the chief innovation officer and a member of ey uk and ireland's leadership team. harry is also chair of the employers’ network for equality and inclusion (enei). harry gaskell zoe is a co-founder and director of the institute of making. she has a phd in materials from king's college london and regularly appears on television discussing materials, engineering and science. zoe laughlin ultan took up his role chief scientist in oncology at astrazeneca in 2018. he previously worked for the wellcome sanger institute. ultan mcdermott lucy is a conservative member of the house of lords and served as a government minister for three years. she is chair of assured food standards and was on the board of tesco plc from 2006 until 2013. lucy neville-rolfe kriti is the vice president for artificial intelligence at sage. in 2017, she was selected in the forbes 30 under 30 in tech list and, in 2018, was made a un young leader. kriti sharma rory is vice chair of ogilvy & mather uk and is an expert on consumer behaviour, trends and the influence of the internet. his ted talks have been watched by nearly 9 million people. rory sutherland jo is the mp for east dunbartonshire and liberal democrat deputy leader. she was a business minister and minister for women and equalities in the coalition government (2012-2015) and, in 2018, helped set-up a technology and artificial intelligence commission. jo swinson ben is an assurance technology partner at ey uk, with a role to bring innovation to clients, and to help disrupt and transform ey’s own business. ben taylor michael is the chief technology officer for microsoft uk and is responsible for all aspects of the uk technology strategy. michael wignall david is the chair of the british science association, the former minister for universities and science and a conservative member of the house of lords. david willetts alison is associate professor in genetics at hertford college, university of oxford. in 2013, she presented the royal institution christmas lectures on the bbc. alison woollard linda is a fellow in economics at st edmund hall, oxford university and was previously chief business correspondent for bbc news. she is a non-executive director of ftse 100 listed rentokil initial. linda yueh agenda 10.00 | pre-summit roundtables -- 10.00 pre-summit roundtables there will be two pre-summit roundtables for invited guests. public perceptions – does it matter who funds science?
